Refinements to Library Management and Stability · Release Candidate 22

We're releasing a new update to Aspect focused on improving library workflows, addressing specific usability points, and enhancing overall stability. This release includes refinements to how you manage libraries and instances, alongside several bug fixes.

Library and Instance Management

We’ve clarified the distinction between a library (representing the entirety of all contained files and and the organization structure) and a library instance (a specific synchronized copy of the library containing some or all of the actual files). To reflect this, switching between different libraries is now done through the existing “File” menu. Switching between local instances of the same library is handled through a new “Library” → “Switch Active Library Instance” menu. This change aims to provide a more accurate representation of how Aspect handles your photo collections.

Editor Detection and Local Availability

We’ve continued to improve Aspect’s ability to automatically detect your editing software. This release adds support for DxO FilmPack and PureRAW. You’ll also notice that “Show in Finder/Explorer” menu items for events and files are now grayed out when those assets are not available locally. This provides clearer visual feedback regarding local accessibility.

Bug Fixes and Stability Improvements

This update addresses several key bug fixes and improvements:

  • Clarified “Delete Library” Functionality: This now correctly reflects the operation as “Delete Library Instance,” clarifying the action performed.
  • Improved Image Analysis: Image analysis now consistently triggers after switching between library instances.
  • Startup Window Placement: We’ve corrected issues that could previously result in the application window opening off-screen at startup.
  • Local Availability Syncing: Newly created events will now sync to download from other instances more reliably.
  • File Management: Several issues related to deleting and managing events and files, particularly those not available locally, have been addressed.
  • Recent Imports: The reappearance of deleted files and duplicates in the Recent Imports section has been resolved.
  • Trash Handling: An error that could occur when attempting to delete a missing file from the library trash has been fixed.
  • Snippet Display: The layout of the snippet list has been improved to ensure long titles are displayed correctly.
