Improved External Editor Detection on Linux & Stability · Release Candidate 27

This update focuses primarily on enhancing the experience for our Linux users, with additional stability improvements across all platforms.

Linux Improvements – External Editor Detection & Stability

We're significantly improving how Aspect detects and integrates with external photo editors on Linux. Previously, editor detection relied on finding the executable file. This update changes that to utilize desktop file based auto-detection, matching applications by their application ID. This offers greater accuracy and consistency across different Linux distributions and editor setups.

As a result of this change, Aspect now recognizes the following editors automatically: AfterShot, Darktable, Fotoxx, GIMP, Pinta, Krita, RawTherapee, showFoto, and VLC. We’re continuing to expand this list, and welcome feedback on additional editors you’d like to see supported.

Beyond just detection, this change allows Aspect to retrieve application icons for better visual representation within the interface.

Bug Fixes

This update also addresses a number of bug reports:

  • Crash Fix: A potential crash that could occur when quickly closing dialog windows has been resolved.
  • Keyboard Shortcut Handling: Custom keyboard shortcuts with modifiers are now handled properly on Linux.
  • Orientation Correction: A bug affecting the orientation of edited variants of images with non-zero rotations has been fixed.
  • File Indicator Updates: The file indicator now correctly reflects new image detections occurring outside of event or individual photo folders.
  • Full Disk Cache Handling: A crash that could happen when loading disk caches on a completely full drive has been addressed.
  • “Edit a Copy” Variant Recognition: Files created as “edit a copy” are now correctly recognized as variants when using external editors, even if the file format matches the editor’s configured format.
  • Thumbnail View Toolbar Visibility: The toolbar is now visible again in thumbnail view.
