Language Support & Improved Large Image Handling · Release Candidate 32

This update brings French and Ukrainian to the list of supported languages, alongside refinements to existing functionality and addressing a few key stability issues. It’s a relatively focused release, building on recent improvements and ensuring a smoother workflow for all Aspect users.

Adding French and Ukrainian as Supported Languages

We’re pleased to announce that French and Ukrainian are now supported languages within Aspect. This expands the application's accessibility and aims to provide a more comfortable user experience for photographers in those regions.

Translating the application is a big task, with thousands of text snippets to process, so if you find any mistakes, please let us know!

Enhanced Large Image Handling

One notable enhancement is an improvement to how Aspect handles very large images (those exceeding 16384 pixels in either dimension). Various image formats, most notably JPEG-XL and TIFF, can now be displayed with large resolution, as long as they fit into memory. In the future it is planned to further improve this in terms of performance and memory use as soon as the underlying libraries add support for loading partial image contents.

Addressing Stability & Specific Issues

This release also addresses a number of bug fixes to enhance overall stability:

  • Linux Video Decoding: Resolved an issue preventing correct decoding of video files.
  • macOS Startup Crash: A crash occurring at startup when forcing standard window frames on macOS has been fixed.
  • JXL Image Loading: Stability has been improved for loading large JXL images, preventing a previous crash.
  • Quick-Peek Behavior: The image jumping behavior during the quick-peek function (middle mouse button interaction) has been corrected.
  • Details View Crash: A crash when navigating to the details view from a thumbnail view with no items has been resolved.
  • Missing Photo Download Crash: Added a fix to prevent a potential crash during missing photo downloads if disk access fails.
  • Scanned Folder Event Crash: Resolved a possible crash following a previous crash immediately after selecting a scanned folder as an event.
  • Disabling Custom Frames on Linux: It is now also possible to disable custom window frames on Linux for cases where the custom frames interact badly with the window manager
  • Progress Indicator for Library Locking: When waiting for an existing library lock, a progress indicator is now displayed to indicate that the application is not stuck
