Smarter Organization, Improved Stability, and Refined Diagnostics · Release Candidate 54

This latest beta release continues to tighten up the photo management experience with a focus on workflow flexibility, metadata performance, and more reliable diagnostics.

Library Management and Organization

A notable change in this release is the expanded flexibility when working with photos that exist in events or individual folders but are not currently available in the active library instance. These images can now be dragged within the application, making it easier to reorganize or reference material that may be stored on a disconnected drive or a different library node without needing to bring everything local first.

We have also adjusted the default folder naming scheme for individual photo imports. New folders now include both the year and month in their names, which should reduce the need to manually rename directories when importing large batches across busy shooting seasons. Alongside this, the "Move To Library Trash" context menu entry is now correctly visible within search results, restoring a missing piece of workflow functionality.

Performance and Metadata Handling

Behind the scenes, we fixed a performance issue where metadata for already-cached images was being unnecessarily re-cached on every application start. This avoids lengthy "Synchronizing File System" activities that could take multiple hours for large libraries.

Crash Reporting and Diagnostics

Several changes in this update focus on making crash reporting more useful and less frustrating. When a crash occurs, the reporter now includes buttons to browse directly to the images potentially involved, making it easier to verify context before submitting a report. Additionally, if the server returns an error when sending a report, that message now appears in a proper text box that supports copying—useful for troubleshooting network or server-side issues without retyping error codes. We also fixed a layout issue that caused the crash reporter dialog to become excessively tall when many images were potentially linked to the crash.

Interface and Interaction Refinements

On the interaction side, the image status icon in the upper-left corner of thumbnails now carries an explanatory tooltip, clarifying what each indicator means at a glance. We corrected a few issues around keyboard shortcuts: resetting a shortcut to its default now takes effect immediately rather than requiring a restart, and the shortcut configuration dialog no longer incorrectly accepts key combinations that use only Shift as a modifier.

Other UI fixes include resolving bogus three-dot buttons that appeared in the synchronization pane after switching themes, improving visibility for various elements under the light theme, and fixing a brief but repetitive flicker of the "Downloading Missing Files" activity indicator when some images are missing from the source library. In the details view, the loupe and navigator now remain functional after switching between local collections, and a crash that occurred when using the mouse wheel with no image selected has been resolved.

Stability

This update addresses several edge-case crashes. We fixed crashes that could occur when restoring files from library trash – both when attempting to restore a missing file and in a rare secondary scenario. macOS users should also see improved stability when invoking certain actions while the application is not in focus.

Linux-Specific Improvements

On Linux, the folder chooser dialog now includes a "New Folder" button, and selecting a folder in the list correctly scrolls to and highlights the item.

As always, see the change log for the full list of changes.
